We should all be zocha im yirtzeh Hashem. 2:58 And with that let us begin. 2:59 Today's daf is Pei-Daled 84. 3:00 I we're going to move we're going to move at a good pace today. 3:03 We are picking up because we have to because we're picking up in the middle of yesterday's daf. 3:06 But we left off pretty much by the Gemara on פ\"ג עמוד ב'. 3:11 So we've we've got a we actually got two lines in but we're going to just start from the Gemara once again. 3:16 Just very quickly rabosai let's go. 3:17 Remember we started the perek with the mitzvah of kisuy hadam. 3:20 The mitzvah of kisuy hadam is the mitzvah to go out after you shacht a chaya or an of, you're obligated to go ahead and cover the blood with dirt. 3:27 So again remember what we did not get into yet and I'm going to do a little bit tomorrow im yirtzeh Hashem hopefully is a little bit of the ta'amei hamitzvah. 3:33 Like the logic behind the mitzvah, why exactly do we have such a mitzvah like this? 3:37 Again a lot of beautiful Torah about that but not for tonight. 3:40 The one thing that the Mishna did tell me is that halacha l'ma'aseh this only applies to chullin animals, it does not apply to mukdashim, hekdesh. 3:47 So that's going to be our topic. 3:49 The Gemara asks מוקדשין מאי טעמא לא? 3:50 Why doesn't the mitzvah of kisuy hadam apply to mukdashin? Mishum Rabbi Zeira d'amar Rabbi Zeira, השוחט צריך שיתן עפר למטה ועפר למעלה. 3:59 Because rabosai why? Because again because halacha l'ma'aseh as rabosai as we're going to see the mechanics of it. 4:05 The umbrellas are for grabs if you want. 4:08 Sorry. And the and thank you to the Artman family the official drink sponsor of the suburban Daf Yomi. Shkoiyach. 4:16 So so remember we'll get into we'll get into the mechanics but ultimately we're going to see that kisuy hadam requires for dirt to be below the blood and above the blood. 4:24 So in other words in a typical case of kisuy hadam what you would do is you would take let's say rabosai remember again kisuy hadam is a fairly common mitzvah because remember a chicken is in the of family. 4:33 So you want to shacht the chicken. 4:34 What do you have to do? 4:35 You put some dirt down on the ground, you shacht the chicken, the blood right chicken bleeds out alright it does the chicken the blood comes out and then you cover and then you cover the blood again. 4:46 That's how kisuy hadam works. 4:47 So the Gemara says oh now I understand why you can't do it by by korbanos. 4:53 Why? So the Gemara says because השוחט צריך שיתן עפר למטה ועפר למעלה because you have to put dirt below the blood and above the blood shene'emar. she'ne'emar ושפך את דמו וכסהו בעפר. 5:04 Torah says you shall spill the blood of the animal and you shall cover it be-afar. 5:09 Now what does be-afar mean? 5:10 Afar, it could have said ve-khisa afar. 5:12 It doesn't say cover dirt or rather again ve-khiso be-afar. 5:16 What does be-afar mean? 5:17 be-afar means essentially, essentially enveloped in dirt, which means dirt on the bottom, blood and then dirt on top. 5:26 מלמד שהשוחט צריך שיתן עפר למטה ועפר למעלה. This teaches us that the shokhet has to put dirt below the blood and above the blood. 5:31 Aye, so what's the problem then with sacrificial animals? 5:34 ve-hakha lo efshar. By a korban you can't do it. 5:38 Why not? hekhei le-avid? Cause listen to this, rabbosai, if there has to be dirt underneath the blood and remember again rabbosai with a sacrificial animal, where does the blood go? 5:45 Where does the blood go? 5:46 On the mizbeach. So what are you going to do? 5:49 You're going to put dirt on the mizbeach first? 5:51 So the Gemara says hekhei le-avid? leisiv u-levatlei? ka-mosif a-binyan. 5:55 See rabbosai, listen to this, if halacha lemaise you do put dirt on the mizbeach and let's say you're mevatel it. 6:00 mevatel it means you have no intention of going ahead and you have no intention of going ahead and removing it. 6:05 Well if that's the case you're mevatel it, then what are you effectively doing? 6:08 You are adding onto the structure of the mizbeach. 6:12 And what's the halacha? 6:15 וכתיב הכל בכתב מיד ה' עלי השכיל. And the pasuk says all the dimensions of the beis hamikdash, all the dimensions of the keilim were given to us by the Ribono Shel Olam. 6:25 As such you are not allowed to enlarge it at all. 6:28 So what do you do rabbosai? 6:29 I just want to point out how incredible is this, how incredible is this on Motzaei Tisha B'Av to have a Beis Hamikdash Gemara. 6:37 Just how ridiculous is that? 6:39 And don't get technical that it's yesterday's daf. 6:41 Don't, don't do that. 6:42 You know, let me have my moment. 6:44 Just let me have my moment, right? 6:46 rabbosai just, just remember again the Ribono Shel Olam did not want us to finish yesterday's daf. 6:49 It wasn't my problem, it was God's problem. 6:51 He runs the world. 6:52 He did not want us to finish yesterday's daf so that we could begin tonight Motzaei Tisha B'Av with a Gemara about the Beis Hamikdash. 6:58 It's great. lo le-vatlei? So if I put the dirt on the mizbeach and I'm not mevatel it, ka-ve-khatzitza. 7:04 Then it's a khatzitza, right? 7:06 So in other words, either way I'm stuck. 7:08 What do I do? 7:09 So therefore it would seem to be that the reason there is no obligation of Kisui HaDam on sacrificial animals is because you can't fulfill the mechanics of Kisui HaDam. Kisui HaDam requires blood, excuse me, dirt below the blood, then blood and then dirt above. 7:23 You can't put dirt on the mizbeach because of mi mah nafshach. 7:26 If you put dirt there and you're mevatel it, you're adding onto the structure of the mizbeach, illegal. 7:31 If you're not mevatel it, then it's a khatzitza, it's an interposition, which then would invalidate the avoda. 7:36 To which the Gemara says but one second, נהי דלמטה לא אפשר למעלה אפשר להוי כיסוי. 7:41 Okay, fine, who just because you can't do blood on the bottom, so why not just go ahead, put the sacrificial blood there and cover it on top? 7:50 I understand ideally it's good to do top and bottom, but if you could only do the top that should work as well. 7:55 mi lo tanya didn't we learn? 7:57 רבי יונתן בן יוסף אומר שחט חיה ואחר כך שחט בהמה. Isn't this rabbosai an interesting case? 8:02 If a person shakhted a khaya and then afterwards he shakhted a beheima. 8:05 So what's the halacha? patur min ha-khisos. 8:07 You're patur from Kisui HaDam. 8:08 Now why are you patur? 8:09 Why are you patur? 8:10 Because the khaya blood has already been covered by the beheima blood. 8:14 So what are you going to cover? 8:15 The blood is already covered. 8:17 beheima ve-akharkakh khaya. If ever you shakhted first the beheima and then on top of the blood of the beheima and then on top of the beheima you shakhted a khaya, so therefore the blood of the khaya is above the blood of the 8:27 beheima, then khayav le-khassos. Ultimately you are obligated to cover it. 8:30 So what do you see from here? 8:31 In that case what's underneath the blood of the khaya? 8:33 What's underneath it? The blood of the beheima. 8:35 And yet what does the halacha say? 8:37 Okay, do what you can. 8:38 Do what you can. 8:39 Ideally yes, we would like to go ahead and get and we get dirt on top of the blood and below the blood. 8:45 But if you can't do it, then just simply do what you can. 8:48 To which the Gemara says kid'Rabbi Zeira. 8:50 So what's the issue? 8:51 The issue's like Rabbi Zeira. 8:52 דאמר רבי זירא כל הראוי לבילה אין בילה מעכבת בו. rabbosai it's from our Menachos days. 8:56 Remember again the halacha is that a mincha can only be up to a certain amount, sixty isaron. 9:01 The halacha is why? 9:02 Because more than sixty isaron you can't properly mix. 9:05 Aye, but the Gemara says the halacha lemaise even if you didn't mix a mincha, the mincha is still valid. 9:11 Yes, what's the halacha by a mincha? 9:12 The halacha by a mincha is it has to be fit to be mixed. 9:16 As long as it can be mixed you don't have to mix it. 9:19 But if you can't mix it, then ultimately again it's invalid. 9:23 So same idea, the Gemara says so same idea, you're right. 9:27 Technically speaking, if if you didn't put the dirt below the blood and you only put the dirt above the blood, you're right, you're yotzei. 9:34 But that's talking about a case where you could have put the dirt below the blood. 9:39 The problem is with the sacrificial case it is impossible to put the dirt below the blood because of the reasons that we just mentioned before. 9:47 Aye, the Gemara says ve-ligrerei ve-likhsei. 9:49 So why not go ahead, rabbosai, so why don't you do this? 9:52 Why don't go ahead, put the blood on the mizbeach, cover it, cover it with dirt. 9:57 Then go ahead and scrape it off the mizbeach onto dirt. 10:01 dirt that's waiting on the ground, and then do kissui like that? 10:03 So therefore again, there could be, there could be bottom dirt, just have it off the mizbe'ach. Mi-lo tanan, didn't we learn דם הניתז שעל הסכין חייב לכסות? 10:10 We learned that again if blood splatters or blood is left on a knife, what do you do? 10:16 You're still that is still chayav in kissui hadam. 10:18 What do you do? 10:19 You go ahead and you just scrape it off. 10:21 So you see from here that halacha lema'aseh, although the classic case of kissui hadam is where you're putting the dirt down, shechting the animal on top of the dirt, then once the blood comes in covering it again, if the dirt splatters or 10:32 smears somewhere else, you could scrape it off and put it on the blood and put it on the dirt. 10:36 So why not do this on the mizbe'ach? 10:37 הכא נמי נגרר ונכסיה. So ultimately again, so why not just scrape it off the mizbe'ach and cover it, put it on dirt on the ground? 10:43 To which the Gemara says you're right, אי בקדשי מזבח הכא נמי. 10:46 If we're talking about what we call kodshei mizbe'ach, regular sacrificial animals, then ein hachi nami you're right. 10:51 But what's the case over here? 10:52 הכא במאי עסקינן בקדשי בדק הבית. We're talking about again rabosei bedek habayit. 10:57 Remember bedek habayit means animals that are sanctified ultimately again for temple upkeep. 11:03 Now what does this mean? 11:03 If you look at the last Rashi on the daf, bekodshei mizbe'ach. 11:06 Rashi says כגון חטאת העוף הכא נמי דחייב לכסות הוא ושחיטה ראויה היא. So ultimately again the Mishnah Rashi goes on, מתניתין בעוף שהקדישן לבדק הבית ושחטן דאסורן בהנאה משום דשחיטה שאינה ראויה. 11:12 What are we talking about over here? 11:12 We're talking about birds which were sanctified for bedek habayit, temple upkeep, which means they were never supposed to be shechted as korbanot. 11:18 Somebody made a mistake, shechted them as korbanot. 11:21 That is what we call a shechita she'eina re'uya, like we just had that sugya by oso v'es beno which we're going to reference again now. 11:36 So because ultimately again it wasn't supposed to be shechted, therefore again we're stuck. 11:41 Ai, rabosei top of pei daled 84A, venifrikinu ve-lechisnu. 11:43 So why not go ahead if that's the case, redeem it, go ahead and redeem the illegally slaughtered animal and therefore go ahead and cover its blood like that? 11:55 Ba'inan ha'amada v'ha'aracha. No, because rabosei, in order to redeem an animal that has bedek habayit sanctity, which essentially is monetary sanctity, what do you need? 12:04 You need ha'amada v'ha'aracha. The animal has to be standing and you have to evaluate it. 12:08 In other words, in order to redeem a bedek habayit animal, the animal has to be alive. 12:12 So you have to be able to literally see it standing and be able to assess it. 12:16 Obviously we're talking about a slaughtered animal over here. 12:19 U-keman? Whose opinion is this? 12:20 Ei Rabbi Meir, דאמר הכל היו בכלל העמדה והערכה. Rabbi Meir holds everyone, excuse me, all animals were in the context ultimately again of ha'amada, ha'amada means literally the animal has to be standing v'ha'aracha and evaluation. 12:33 So the Gemara says הא אמר שחיטה שאינה ראויה שמה שחיטה. 12:37 Rabbi Meir holds, Rabbi Meir holds that even a shechita that does not produce a consumable animal is still called shechita. Ei Rabbi Shimon, דאמר שחיטה שאינה ראויה לא שמה שחיטה, and if it's Rabbi Shimon who holds that shechita she'eina re'uya, which again rabosei means that even if a shechita does not 12:54 produce an animal that you could eat, halacha lema'aseh the shechita is still a valid act, I'm sorry, just the opposite, שחיטה שאינה ראויה לא שמה שחיטה, הא אמר לא היו בכלל העמדה והערכה. 13:04 He holds ultimately again that these animals are not subject to be redeemed even without ha'amada and ha'aracha. 13:10 אמר רב יוסף רבי היא. In reality the Mishnah reflects the view of Rebbi, ונסיב לה אליבא דתנאי. 13:15 And ultimately again Rebbi holds like two different Tannaim. 13:18 Watch this. בשחיטה שאינה ראויה סבר לה כרבי שמעון. In the situation of shechita she'eina re'uya, which again rabosei means remember we've seen this case before, like for example the classic case of shechita she'eina re'uya you shecht an animal that's a treifa. 13:29 It's a treifa, so you've done mechanistically you've done a proper shechita. 13:33 But however again it does not produce an animal that you can, that you can eat. 13:37 So again Rebbi holds ultimately again like Rabbi Shimon when it comes to shechita she'eina re'uya, ובהעמדה והערכה סבר לה כרבי מאיר. 13:44 But when it comes ultimately again to redemption of bedek habayit animals, he holds like Rabbi Meir. 13:50 Okay. V'iba'it eima, another possibility is כולה רבי שמעון היא. 13:53 Maybe the whole thing is Rabbi Shimon. 13:55 V'shani hacha, why is this case different? 13:57 Again rabosei, maybe kissui hadam is just different. 13:59 Why? דאמר קרא ושפך וכסה. Because what does the pasuk say? 14:03 V'shafach which means again for our purposes you'll slaughter, you'll slaughter and you'll cover. 14:07 What does this tell us? 14:10 מי שאינו מחוסר אלא שפיכה וכיסוי. When is there a mitzvah of kissui hadam? 14:14 When all the animal is missing is shechting and kissui. Yatza zeh, this comes to exclude a sacrificial animal, why? 14:23 שמחוסר שפיכה פדיון וכיסוי. Because the bedek habayit animal in order for it to be subject to kissui hadam would require what? 14:30 Shechita, right shechita literally shechita, pidyon, redemption and covering, it's an extra step. 14:36 To which the Gemara says well one second, if that's the case, bless you, if that's the case, והשתא דאתית להכי. 14:41 If that's the case that again rabosei, the only time that an animal is going to be subject to kissui hadam is if there's only two stages involved, v'shafach you slaughter it and v'chisa. 14:52 If those are the two stages, then the animal is subject to kissui hadam. 14:55 If there are more stages than that, it's not subject. 14:58 If that's true, if that's true. 15:02 אפילו תימא קדשי מזבח then you could, that's how you could exclude all karbonos from kisoy hadam. 15:09 Why? מי שאינו מחוסר אלא שפיכה וכיסוי because rabosai what does the pasuk come to exclude or I should say the only things included in the mitzvah of kisoy hadam is bashafach vechiso. 15:17 If there's shchita and covering. 15:20 יצא זה שמחוסר שפיכה גרירה וכיסוי and therefore this would come to exclude ultimately again an animal that requires shchita, slaughter, g'rira, because rabosai remember again what we were suggesting before is scrape the blood off the mizbeiach and then squeeze it onto dirt that's on the 15:36 ground and then covering. 15:38 Okay, incredible. So rabosai the Gemara just suggested so remember, the good part over here is no one is, no one is challenging the assertion of the Mishna, which is that halacha l'maise only chullin animals, and when I say animals it's chayos 15:52 and ofos are subject to kisoy hadam. 15:55 Sacrificial animals are not. 15:58 So we have two possibilities as to why that may be true. 16:01 Right? One possibility might be because kisoy hadam really requires dirt above and below and on a mizbeiach you can't do below. 16:09 That's possibility one. Possibility two is just it's based on the pasuk. 16:13 The pasuk says v'shafach v'kisoh. 16:16 There are two steps in the mitzvah of kisoy hadam: shchita and covering. 16:20 If the animal requires any additional steps, then it's not subject to the mitzvah. 16:24 What's an example of an animal which requires additional steps? 16:27 Any sacrificial animal. Any sacrificial animal is going to require something additional. 16:32 If it's a regular karbon, then ultimately it's going to have to be scraped off the mizbeiach and if it is a bedek habayis animal it's going to require some type of redemption. 16:40 Incredible. Amar bar Abashi. Amar bar Abashi is a different approach. 16:43 He says like this: Amar Kra. 16:45 The pasuk says chaya o of. 16:52 So the pasuk says, remember what's subject to kisoy hadam, either a chaya or an of, right? 16:58 Chaya rabosai means a non-domesticated animal, of is birds, fowl. 17:03 מה חיה אינה קודש. So here's his interesting point rabosai. 17:05 A chaya is never offered up sacrificially. 17:08 There's no such thing as a karbon that is brought from a chaya. 17:12 So just like a chaya, right, מה חיה אינה קודש, just like a chaya can't be sanctified, אף עוף אינו קודש. 17:20 So too a bird can't be sanctified as well. 17:23 And again rabosai what would this do? 17:24 This would exclude any sacrificial animal. 17:26 Right? Now, again, I don't need a limud to exclude sacrificial chayos. 17:31 Why not? Why not? 17:32 There are none. There are none. 17:35 But just like a chaya has no shaychus ultimately again to karbonos, so too any sacrificial bird ultimately is not subject to kisoy hadam as well. 17:44 Well if that's the case, אם חיה שאין במינה קודש, then remember again with a chaya as we just said before, there is no type of chaya that is sacrificially relevant. 17:54 אף עוף שאין במינה קודש. So too I would say only birds that are not sacrificially relevant should be excluded as well. 18:02 Therefore again הוציא תורין ובני יונה שיש במינן קודש, but wait a second there are birds that are offered up sacrificially, right, like the turtle dove and the pigeon. 18:13 Those are offered up sacrificially. 18:15 So maybe those should be subject to kisoy hadam. 18:17 To which the Gemara lo k'chaya. 18:20 We compare the bird to a chaya. 18:21 How so? מה חיה לא חילקת בה. Just like by a chaya we make no distinction, right? 18:27 By a chaya ultimately again all chayos are not subject, I'm sorry, are not subject to sacrificial law. 18:38 אף עוף לא תחלוק. So although I know that there are birds that are relevant to sacrificial law, when it comes to kisoy hadam there is no mitzvah of kisoy hadam by any of the birds. 18:47 Okay incredible. אמר ליה יעקב מינא לרבא. So rabosai listen to this. 18:50 So therefore this is answer number three. 18:52 Answer number three is how do I know that sacrificial animals are not subject to kisoy hadam? 18:59 How do I know that? 19:01 Because halacha l'maise the Torah says chaya o of and just like a chaya is not subject to karbonos, so too an of ultimately again has no shaychus of kisoy hadam to karbonos as well. 19:12 The Gemara says as follows: אמר ליה יעקב מינא לרבא. 19:15 So rabosai this, this is absolutely fascinating. 19:17 So the Gemara quotes over here this guy Yakov Mina. 19:20 Now Mina is not a place. 19:22 Mina means a Min, an Apikores. 19:26 An Apikores. It's absolutely, I don't know, absolutely fascinating. 19:33 Absolutely fascinating. So Yakov Mina ultimately again said to Rava. 19:37 So rabosai by the way, what's the pshat? 19:40 What's the pshat that the Gemara is quoting a Min? 19:42 By the way a Min, the Rambam brings in Hilchos Teshuva, is like one of the higher levels of like Apikorsus. 19:47 Like if you're a Min, you're not like a recreational Apikores, you're not like on the weekends. 19:52 You know, this is if you're a Min like this is hardcore. 19:55 This is hardcore Apikorsus. 19:56 Like you are a bad guy. 19:57 You are a bad guy. 19:58 So what's the pshat? 20:00 Why is it here? 20:01 Raboisai, you have to understand something. 20:02 Just mentioned this before, in the last few moments of Tisha B'av, the sefarim bring down that Yamim Noraim begin tonight. 20:11 The Yamim Noraim, the journey to Yamim Noraim begins right after Tisha B'av. 20:14 People think it's Elul. 20:14 It's not Elul. It's already began before for us, for us. 20:17 Right? But for the rest of the world, it begins Motzei Tisha B'av. Raboisai, how incredible is it that even a guy who's a min could find his way back into the Gemara? 20:27 The Ribono Shel Olam on the first night of Yamim Noraim gives us a message of teshuva that even Yakov Mino'ah. 20:34 How could, what, what, what is this guy doing here? 20:39 Why is he taking up space on the page of the Gemara? 20:44 Why? Because Raboisai, because there's space for everyone. 20:46 Sometimes we think we're such damaged goods, we think we're just beyond repair, we think we cannot fix the things that we have broken. 20:52 It's not true. Sometimes you can't fix everything, but you could fix enough to find your way back in. 20:58 If there's room on the page for Yakov Mino'ah, then על אחת כמה וכמה there is room in the Ribono Shel Olam's heart for each of us as well. 21:07 Incredible. So אמר ליה יעקב מינואה לרבא: קיימא לן חיה בכלל בהמה לסימנין. I guess remember we learned that halacha l'maaseh. 21:13 A chaya is included in behema for simanim, which means the same way that a behema has simanim, kaneh and veshet, and those two things, the majority of those two simanim have to be cut in order for the behema to be kasher. 21:24 The same halacha applies to chaya. 21:29 So why don't I say that maybe behema, just like chaya is included in the klal of behema for shechita purposes, why don't I say that behema is included under the umbrella of chaya for kisuy hadam purposes? 21:42 And just like there's a mitzvah of kisuy hadam ultimately again by chaya, there should be a mitzvah of kisuy hadam by behema. 21:51 It's not a bad question. 21:52 It's not a bad question. 21:55 אמר ליה עליך אמר קרא, about you or about this question the pasuk says: על הארץ תשפכנו כמים. 22:01 The pasuk says you shall take the blood, right, and pour it on the ground like water. 22:05 מה מים לא בעי כיסוי. So raboisai, so remember again the Torah's talking about over here after you shecht a behema, the Torah says you shall pour the blood of the behema on the earth like water. 22:16 מה מים לא בעי כיסוי. Just like water doesn't need any type of kisuy, any type of covering, אף האי נמי לא בעי כיסוי. 22:24 So too the blood of a behema doesn't require covering as well. 22:28 Okay. So listen to this. 22:29 Yakov Mino'ah is not finished. 22:31 He says: Ella me'ata, if that's true, that the blood of a behema is like water, יטבלו בו. 22:36 Use it as a mikvah? 22:38 Right? If the blood of behema is like water, so why not fill a mikvah with it and use that as a mikvah? Amar kura: אך מעיין ובור מקוה מים יהיה טהור. 22:47 No, because the pasuk says it has to again either be a maayan, a spring, bor mikveh mayim, or a pit, ultimately a collection of water. 22:54 That's what affects tahara. 22:56 הני אין מידי אחרינא לא. Only these items affect tahara, other items do not. 23:02 ואימא הני מילי למיעוטי שאר משקין, maybe that's coming just to exclude other other liquids, delo ikru mayim, that are not called water. 23:09 Those items cannot be used for a mikvah. 23:12 אבל דם דאיקרי מים, but blood which is clearly compared to water halacha l'maaseh again, halacha l'maaseh you should be able to use it for a mikvah. 23:26 So the fact that the Torah goes out of its way to say maayan mayim and bor mayim indicates that water yes, blood no. 23:38 ואימא אידי ואידי למיעוטי שאר משקין, חד למיעוטי זוחלין וחד למיעוטי מכונסין, to exclude these liquids whether they are flowing or whether they are collected. 23:44 To which the Gemara says: Tlata mi'utei kesivi. 23:47 There are three exclusionary phrases that are written: מעיין מים, בור מים, מקוה מים. 23:52 And from those three exclusions, raboisai, we learn yes, we exclude other liquids whether they are flowing or whether they are stationary, and we also exclude blood. 24:00 But interestingly enough, just want to point out, the answer is fascinating. 24:04 Why wouldn't we say that since chaya is included in behema for the halachos of shechita, behema should be included in chaya for the mitzvah of kisuy hadam? 24:12 So first of all, the Torah itself goes out of its way to discuss chaya and of, but also when it comes to the blood of behema, the Torah explicitly says: על הארץ תשפכנו כמים. 24:21 Tells you take the blood of the behema, pour it out like water, that the blood of a behema is like water, not like dam. 24:27 Incredible. Alright raboisai, watch this. 24:29 Beautiful Gemara. Tanu rabanan. It's beautiful. 24:31 This is, raboisai, tremendous Gemara ahead of us right now. 24:31 Tanu rabanan: Tzed. Pasuk says... The pasuk says: איש איש מבני ישראל ומן הגר הגר בתוכם אשר יצוד ציד חיה או עוף אשר יאכל ושפך את דמו. 24:37 Raboisai, listen to this. 24:41 This is the pasuk by kisuy hadam. 24:43 Now it's interesting to see how the Gemara structures the pasuk. 24:48 So it says: If a person goes ahead and hunts... 24:50 So listen to this. 24:51 This is a pasuk by kisuy hadam. 24:53 Now it's interesting to see how the Gemara structures the pasuk. 24:57 So it says if a person goes ahead and hunts, hunts and traps a chayah or an of or an of and asher ye'achel and spill its blood, vechiso be'afar, cover the blood ultimately again in dirt, right? 25:12 So it's interesting, it's framing it as hunting. 25:14 You're hunting and you're trapping. 25:15 So what's the pshat? 25:18 אשר יצוד אלו אל אשר יצוד ניצודים ועומדים מאליהם. So from the pasuk, it's interesting, from the pasuk I would have thought that maybe the mitzvah of kisuy hadam only applies to something you trap, you hunting and you trap. 25:29 But let's say you found it trapped already or it's just around, right? 25:32 You didn't do any trapping, maybe there's no mitzvah of kisuy hadam. Kigon, the Beraita says, however, nitzodim ve'omdim me'aleihem, but animals that are kind of just literally trapped by themselves, which means they're just standing around. 25:45 Kigon, ovzin vetarnigolim, like chickens and geese, right? 25:48 So they're just in my backyard, right? 25:50 It's just in a pen in my backyard. 25:51 How do I know I didn't hunt them, I didn't trap them? 25:54 How do I know that if I shachted, it's subject to kisuy hadam? Talmud lomar, tzayid mikol makom. 25:59 Therefore the pasuk says tzayid. 26:00 Again because it's a kafel lashon, asher yitzod tzayid. Asher yitzod means you'll trap it. 26:07 Tzayid means it's contained, it's contained mikol makom. Im ken, מה תלמוד לומר אשר יצוד? 26:12 So again rabosai, so this is very strange. 26:14 If the mitzvah of kisuy hadam applies to all chayos and ofos, whether you hunted them, trapped them, or they're just lining up at your doorstep, right, that they're all subject to kisuy hadam, then why, why use the lashon of yitzod tzayid? 26:31 Why use that lashon of hunting and trapping? 26:33 So rabosai, it's beautiful. 26:34 למדה תורה דרך ארץ, Torah teaches us an important lesson: שלא יאכל אדם בשר אלא בהזמנה זו. 26:42 That a person should not go ahead and eat meat except with this type of preparation. 26:47 What does that mean? 26:48 Take a look at Rashi. 26:49 Rashi is almost right across. 26:50 אלא בהזמנה זו כאילו הוא צד שאינו מזומן לו לומר לא יאכל בשר תדיר שלא יעני. What it means is, rabosai, watch this. 27:00 If you, if you imagine for a moment you, you wanted meat and the only way for you to get it was to go out and hunt for it and trap it and get it, what would you do? 27:11 You would not eat a lot of meat, right? 27:15 Chances are whatever else you have in the freezer is going to be looking pretty good, right? 27:19 I'm not going to go out—so the Gemara says something amazing. 27:21 Your consumption of meat should be like you had to trap it. 27:26 Meaning that a person now—this is going to be part of a motif that the Gemara is going through—that a person has to curb certain appetites. 27:33 Because if I don't curb certain appetites, I run the risk of becoming a gluttonous person. 27:38 And if I become a gluttonous person, then halacha lema'aseh, what'll happen? 27:42 Sometimes in order to maintain those appetites, even if I can't afford it, I do whatever I have to do. 27:49 So therefore the Gemara says, curb your appetite. 27:54 Eretz—not in terms of amount of consumption, but be careful with delicacies. 27:57 Because even if you could afford it, even if you could afford it, if it becomes—you know rabosai, you know what they say, right? 28:02 Today's luxuries become tomorrow's necessities. 28:05 So if you go ahead and you overindulge and the luxuries become necessities, you're going to create for yourself an appetite that you're going to be forced to sustain. 28:14 So if you look at meat as something you'd have to hunt for, right, in other words, it doesn't mean that I wouldn't hunt for it or trap it and go and eat it, but I'm not going to just do it 28:22 spuriously, right? I'm not just going to do it just whenever I want. 28:25 There's going to be some level of moderation. 28:29 Incredible, incredible. Tanu Rabbanan. So rabosai, the Gemara goes right like this. 28:33 Tanu Rabbanan: כי ירחיב ה' אלהיך את גבולך. And rabosai, by the way, you know, the Gemara is illustrating this with meat, but lav davka, lav davka it's meat. 28:40 You know, remember again, this is the concept of kedoshim tihiyu. 28:43 Torah says be holy. 28:44 The Ramban says קדש את עצמך במה שמותר לך. 28:47 Kedusha is always moderation. 28:49 It's always moderation. I could have it, but I choose to moderate because ultimately again, moderation creates—well, moderation also creates self-control, and self-control creates a sense of kedusha. Tanu Rabbanan. 29:02 כי ירחיב ה' אלהיך את גבולך. So the pasuk says when Hashem expands your boundaries. 29:06 So the Torah—the rest of the pasuk over here is: כי ירחיב ה' אלוקיך את גבולך כאשר דבר לך ואמרת אכלה בשר כי תאוה נפשך לאכל בשר. 29:12 And rabosai, now this is interesting by the way, because remember in the Midbar, in the desert, you were not allowed to eat basar ta'avah. Basar ta'avah means that if you just wanted to have like a steak for dinner, you could not just shacht 29:24 an animal. In the Midbar, in the desert, if you wanted meat for yourself, you had to bring a korban. 29:28 So you bring a korban, you get some meat from that. 29:31 When we go into Eretz Yisrael, so again that halacha no longer applies. 29:34 When we go into Eretz Yisrael, if you want meat, you could shacht your animal and have meat. 29:38 So the Gemara says כי ירחיב ה' אלוקיך את גבולך, so the pasuk says when Hashem expands your boundaries and you say ואמרת אכלה בשר כי תאוה נפשך לאכול בשר and you decide that you desire meat, you want to eat meat. 29:52 Limdah Torah derech eretz. Torah tells—Torah's teaching us derech eretz. Derech eretz means proper behavior. 29:58 שלא יאכל אדם בשר אלא לתיאבון. This teaches us, Rabbosai, that what? 30:02 That a person ultimately again should only eat meat if he's hungry. 30:06 If he's hungry, that ultimate once again be purposeful in your consumption. 30:13 Don't just consume it because it's available, because you're able to, but be methodical, be thoughtful in your consumption. 30:21 יכול יקח אדם מן השוק ויאכל? You might have thought that a person could just buy whenever he wants from the Shuk and eat. 30:29 תלמוד לומר וזבחת מבקרך ומצאנך. Therefore the Pasuk says ultimately again that what should you do? 30:34 You should offer up from your cattle and from your sheep, which means what, Rabbosai? 30:38 If you have it, if you own it, then enjoy it. 30:42 But if you don't own it, don't get used to buying stuff from the outside in order to sustain your appetite, which, Rabbosai, is another profound way of saying live within your means. 30:53 Live within your means. 30:56 Right? In other words, you want to eat meat? 30:57 If you have cattle and sheep in your possession, Gei gezunterheit, enjoy it. 31:03 But if you don't own it and you have to go out to buy it, you should think twice about that. 31:07 Do you have the means to support that appetite? 31:10 Live within, so again, Rabbosai, two profound lessons: moderation, moderation, and ultimately living within your means. 31:18 יכול ישחט כל בקרו ויאכל כל צאנו? You might have thought ultimately again so therefore okay, if I have the cattle, I have the sheep, I'll Shecht it all and just eat it all. 31:25 Talmud lomar, Rabbosai, ends of the first line, first wide line: מבקרך ולא כל בקרך, מצאנך ולא כל צאנך. 31:34 Even, Rabbosai, even if you have it. 31:35 This is incredible. So again, not only live within your means, but even within your means, don't burn through all of your means. 31:41 Just because you have it doesn't mean you need to use it. 31:46 So in other words, don't use up all of your cattle, don't use up all of your sheep. 31:49 Live within your means and moderate within your means as well. 31:53 So it says, it's like this, there's a Halacha, it's like a lesson of moderation, then there's live within your means, and then there's moderation even within your means. 32:02 Incredible. מכאן אמר רבי אלעזר בן עזריה, Rabbosai, listen to this, this is so fascinating. 32:04 רבי אלעזר בן עזריה said, Rabbosai, third wide line on the bottom: מי שיש לו מנה יקח לפסו ליטרא ירק. 32:11 So, Rabbosai, watch this. 32:12 So now the Gemara says your diet should reflect your financial standing. 32:16 So watch this. If all you have is a Maneh, you should buy vegetables to put in your pot. 32:21 In other words, you don't have a lot of money, make vegetable soup. 32:25 It's delicious. That's what you have. 32:28 Asara maneh, if you have ten Maneh, יקח לפסו ליטרא דגים. 32:32 All right, if you have ten Maneh, you're a little wealthier, you could buy fish. 32:35 You could buy fish. 32:37 Chamishim maneh, if you have fifty Maneh, Ultimately again, buy for yourself ultimately again one Litra of meat. 32:47 Me'ah maneh, you have a hundred Maneh, ישפתו לו קדירה בכל יום. 32:51 Then you know what, eat meat every day, do whatever you want. 32:55 Rabbosai, what's incredible about this? 32:58 Rabbosai, the whole Yesod of living within your means is also this recognition of איזהו עשיר השמח בחלקו. 33:05 Who is rich? One who is happy with what he has. 33:10 There are always more who have, there are always those who have more and there are always those who have less. 33:16 So much of life is just being happy with what you have. 33:20 Rabbosai, this in general by the way is very important. 33:21 That's why sometimes when you see, it comes from a good place when communities sometimes try to regulate what everyone does. 33:30 They try to regulate everybody should go, whatever schools sometimes do with Simchas or different things like that, we don't want this one to feel bad, this one to feel bad, this one, it comes from a beautiful place. 33:41 Rabbosai, part of growing up and part of maturation is recognizing there are people who have more than you and there are people who have less than you. 33:48 And there are people who go on nicer vacations than you can, and there are people who drive nicer cars and there are people who live in bigger houses, and then there are people who are poorer than you. 33:55 And life is just about being content with where you are and what you are and not feeling intimidated by those who have more or who have less. 34:04 It's being comfortable in your own skin and finding comfort in what, and not just comfort, happiness, what Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave you. 34:12 Of course when we say be happy with what you have, it doesn't mean you shouldn't aspire for more. 34:16 Rabbosai, life is all about not being happy with what you have and aspiring for more, but in that moment, in that moment, when let's say again I've worked and this is what I have, be happy. 34:26 Enjoy it and don't spend your life looking over your shoulder at what the other one has. 34:30 It's incredible. So the Gemara says yeah, different people have different amounts of money and therefore you know what? 34:34 They're going to be eating different dinners. 34:35 Different, different dinners. Some people have vegetables and some people have meat, and some people have meat once a week and some people have meat every single day. 34:41 And that's okay. That's okay, because Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave us each what we need in order to be successful in life. 34:47 So the Gemara says listen to this, the Gemara says מאה מנה ישפתו לו קדירה בכל יום. 34:52 Ve'ainach? What about these other people who can't afford meat every day? 34:55 So when should they eat meat? 34:57 Like if they have enough money to buy meat episodically, when should they eat it? 35:03 מערב שבת לערב שבת. Rabbosai, Erev Shabbos. Hello, hello, hello. 35:08 Right, Erev Shabbos, Rabbosai, right, an Erev Shabbos Gemara. 35:11 An Erev Shabbos Gemara on Erev Shabbos. Erev Shabbos, a Tshuva Gemara on Bein HaYomim, thank you. 35:17 Right, Erev Shabbos Gemara on Erev Shabbos. 35:18 So when should you eat meat? 35:20 Eat again, if you can't afford meat every single day, meat on Erev Shabbos. 35:24 Incredible. And also, when by the way, I'm sorry, when they say Erev Shabbos, you know Erev Shabbos of course means Shabbos. 35:29 Right, it means again prepare the meat for consumption on—not talking about Tolaas. 35:33 Right, it means go ahead and go ahead and prepare the meat on Erev Shabbos and then have it at least once a week on Shabbos. Amar Rav, so Rav said צריכן אלו הלכה של דברי זקן, we should really pay a lot of attention ultimately again to the Zaken. 35:46 And Rabbosai remember again this is רבי אלעזר בן עזריה who said all of this. 35:49 Incredible, incredible. Pay attention to what רבי אלעזר בן עזריה said. 35:52 Rabbosai, the lessons ultimately again of moderation. 35:55 Live within your means, and even within your means, exhibit moderation even in what you already possess. 36:03 Incredible. Amar Rabbi Yochanan, Rabbosai listen to this. 36:06 This is great. אבא במשפחת בריאים הוה. 36:09 So Rabbi Yochanan said, you know my father, my father, again, that was—so remember, so Rabbi Yochanan is calling Rav his father. 36:17 So Rabbi Yochanan said, my father, my father, right, Rav, was from mishpachas briyim. mishpachas briyim means they're healthy people, they're strong robust people. 36:26 And therefore, and therefore, even if all they had was money for vegetables, good, they could subsist on vegetables. 36:33 Aval kegon anu, but for us, again Rabbosai, what does it mean kegon anu? sheein anu briyim. 36:38 So apparently Rabbi Yochanan was not as physically robust. 36:41 Okay. So he said for us having good food every day is really important for our diet. 36:48 מי שיש לו פרוטה בתוך כיסו יריצנה לחנווני. If all you have is a pruta, give it to the shopkeeper so he can give you good food. 36:55 In other words, even if you have limited funds, make sure to provide for a healthy diet, which Rabbosai obviously again is not talking about excess. 37:02 Rashi says over here, look at the first—look at Rashi first end of the first wide line, Rabbosai watch this, because if I'm not nourished properly then what's going to happen? 37:16 I'm going to become sickly. 37:17 If I become sickly, ultimately I become more dependent on people. 37:22 Now obviously if a guy only has a pruta in his pocket then chances are what? 37:28 Chances are what? He's already dependent on people. 37:31 But at least if I'm healthy I could work. 37:33 If I'm healthy I could hopefully provide for myself and at least again I could ameliorate my own circumstances. 37:40 Masheken, again if I become unhealthy then I become even a greater burden upon others. 37:46 Rabbosai, highlighting this incredible idea of independence, a person trying to do whatever is within their ability to be independent. 37:53 The Gemara goes vaiter. Amar Rav Nachman, kegon anu, like us, kegon anu, lovin vochlin. 37:59 Ultimately we even borrow money to eat good food. 38:02 Like in other words, Rabbosai, so here they're not talking about people, they're not talking about people ultimately again who would go ahead and live in excess. 38:10 But they were poor, but they were poor. 38:11 They understood that maintaining a proper diet was necessary to their physical health because at least when you have physical health you can get out there and do things, masheken if your health is compromised, ultimately it's difficult to get traction on 38:23 anything. The Gemara goes vaiter. 38:23 The Gemara quotes the posuk over here now from Mishlei: כבשים ללבושך ומחיר שדה עתודים. 38:32 So what does it mean kvasim llevushecha? 38:34 Sheep for your clothing. 38:36 מגז כבשים יהיה מלבושך. You should make clothing out of wool. 38:39 You should make clothing out of wool. 38:41 Rashi says over here, right מקרא הוא בספר משלי קנה לך צאן ויהיה לך הגיזה ללבוש. 38:46 Now what the Gemara is understanding over here is as follows: make good investments that pay good dividends. 38:52 So Rabbosai, free piece of financial advice the Gemara is giving us, invest in sheep. 38:56 So by the way, those of us who are on Yarchei Kallah, baruch Hashem, right, was it the last one or two Yarchei Kallas ago? 39:01 Two Yarchei Kallas ago. There are a number of proud sheep owners over here. 39:05 No, they're not—they're no longer with us. 39:07 Oh, they're very dead? 39:10 Oh, okay. I was going to publicly thank Ari Altman because he led that, he led that, he led that—really? 39:16 How do you know that? 39:17 How do you know they're dead? 39:24 Is it—you probably told your kid there's no tooth fairy either, right? 39:26 What kind of person tells another person their sheep is dead? 39:30 Come on. Broke it to us slowly, slowly. 39:33 Just say they're in a better place, they're in a better place. 39:36 Gosh. You know, I'm done. 39:40 I'm done. So the Gemara goes vaiter. 39:42 Listen to this, Rabbosai. 39:43 So what does it mean? 39:45 So sheep are a good investment. 39:47 Why? Because lemaiseh when you invest in sheep you get a number of things. 39:50 So first of all again you get wool. 39:51 So because of the wool, right, ultimately again the wool could be used to make clothing. 39:56 So the Gemara says, so right מגז כבשים יהיה מלבושך ומחיר מגז כבשים ללבושיך ומחיר שדה עתודים. 40:03 Le-olam bosu tishme'u, listen to this. 40:05 לעולם ימכור אדם שדה ויקח עתודים. This is great. 40:07 It is good to sell real estate and invest in sheep. 40:11 Invest in sheep. Why? 40:15 ואל ימכור אדם עתודים ויקח שדה. Whatever you do, don't sell your sheep and invest in real estate. 40:21 Now again, what's the pshat? 40:22 So look at Rashi, this is really incredible. 40:24 ויקח עתודים שונה שיש להם חלב לפרנסה וגיזין ללבוש. Because sheep ultimately are going to produce good dividends. 40:31 You get the milk and you also get the wool, as opposed to real estate. 40:36 Again, now obviously when you're talking about real estate, they're talking about farming real estate. 40:40 There's much less of a predictable yield when it's going to come to the farming real estate. 40:45 Incredible. The Gemara goes veiter. Vdey chalav izim. 40:49 It quotes over here again also from the pasuk of Mishlei. 40:53 ודי חלב עזים דיו לאדם שיתפרנס מחלב גדיים וטלאים שבתוך ביתו. Ultimately again, a person could sustain himself ultimately from the milk and also the wool of the sheep that is within his home. 41:05 So again, this is all also part of the same idea of mareshin, living within your means, recognizing that again, the parnassa that you have in your home, don't necessarily seek out things that are outside ultimately again of your affordability. 41:21 Lelachmecha l'lechem beisecha. לחמך קודם ללחם ביתך. So this is wild. 41:26 So what does it mean when it says for your bread and for the bread of your home? 41:29 It teaches a very important halacha that ultimately your bread comes before the bread of your family. 41:34 Now what does this mean? 41:35 What it means the Gemara seems to be saying is that halacha le-ma'aseh you have to make sure that you feed yourself even before you feed your family. 41:42 Now b'pashut what that means is that if the person is the breadwinner, they have to make sure that they have the ability to go ahead and take care of their family. 41:51 It's kind of like I guess everybody always uses the mashal like on the airplane, the oxygen mask comes down, you have to put on your oxygen mask first and then put on your children's. 41:58 In other words, there is this yesod which actually leaving aside the literal idea over here, how important it is to recognize that if we want to be effective parents and we want to be effective spouses and we want to be 42:10 effective for our families, we have to be good, whole, and healthy people. 42:14 If I'm not in a good spot in life for myself, it's almost impossible to be in a good spot for anyone else. 42:22 A person has to do that self-check. 42:24 Am I healthy? Am I good? 42:25 Am I in a good spiritual space? 42:27 If I am, then be-ezras Hashem I could be a profound mashpiah on others. 42:30 But if not, if I'm not taking care of me, chances are I'm fundamentally and profoundly unable to take care of others. 42:35 Incredible. Let's go veiter. V'chayei l'na'arosecha and give life to your sons. 42:42 אמר מר זוטרא בריה דרב נחמן, ten chayei l'na'arosecha. Ultimately again give life, give life ultimately again to your children. 42:51 What does this mean? 42:52 This is incredible. So the Gemara says מכאן למדה תורה דרך ארץ. 42:56 Torah teaches a very important lesson. 42:58 שלא ילמד אדם את בנו בשר ויין. Wow. Do not teach your kids to enjoy meat and wine. 43:08 Don't teach them to enjoy k'achad hadoros. 43:11 Don't teach them to enjoy meat and wine. 43:13 By the way, I just, it's fascinating. 43:16 In other words, that if you remember, whatever you give your children, your children are going to view it as luxuries. 43:23 Your children ultimately begin to view it as necessities. 43:26 So if you're showing them the high life, just understand that's the bar you're setting for them. 43:32 Now that's fine if they become accomplished enough to be able to sustain that lifestyle. 43:37 But if they themselves can't sustain the lifestyle, you're setting them up for profound crisis. 43:42 Sometimes the most beautiful chinuch that you could do is show your kids the beauty in the simple things. 43:50 Show them the beauty in the easy things. 43:52 They don't need the fancy meat. 43:53 They don't need the fancy wine. 43:55 That's not where their simcha. 43:56 The only way they're even going to know that is if you provide it for them. 44:00 But if you don't provide it and show them the beautiful simcha in the simple things in life, then ultimately they'll grow up to be adults who are not high maintenance. 44:09 High maintenance children become high maintenance adults. 44:12 But ultimately children who grow up with moderation and find the beautiful simplicity in the everyday things in life become low maintenance adults. 44:20 Amar Rabbi Yochanan. Rabbi Yochanan says as follows. 44:21 Amud bais. I told you this is good Gemara tonight. 44:23 This is wild Gemara tonight. 44:25 So the Gemara says harotze sheyisasher, listen to this. 44:27 A person wants to become wealthy, ya'asok b'beheima daka. 44:34 All right, I guess that's it, right? 44:36 That's it. You heard it here. 44:37 So if a person wants to become wealthy, ultimately again go ahead and get involved in beheima daka in small animals because again the idea of small animals is the upkeep is not that great, upkeep is not that great and also they 44:50 provide other things, they multiply. 44:52 They're interesting enough. But this is fascinating because remember there's a whole takana d'rabbanan about raising beheima daka ultimately again in Eretz Yisrael because they graze. 45:01 raise all over the place. 45:02 Okay, seifer for a different time. 45:04 Orchos Chaim at the pasuk ועשתרות צאנך שמעשרות את בעליהן. 45:10 V'ashros tzonecha literally again the flocks of your sheep, play on words, sh'masros es ba'aleihen they make their owners wealthy. 45:16 Rabbi Yochanan, Rabbi Yochanan says, listen to this, כסא דחרשנא ולא כסא דפשרא. 45:20 Poshra. Better to drink from a sorcerer's cup than to drink a cup of lukewarm water. 45:28 And rabosai, apparently what this means is as follows: apparently, now obviously a sorcerer's cup is not a good idea to drink from because b'pashuta they've used it for sorceric purposes. 45:39 That's right, we're using it again. 45:41 If I use it one more time it is officially part of the language, right? 45:44 Again, if that's the word of the day, I'm pretty sure somebody fact-check that, that it was fine. 45:48 Yeah, sorceric. Sorceric or sorcereresic. 45:50 I'm going to go with sorceric. 45:52 Right, so again rabosai, so again you drink of somebody's, somebody's, somebody's cup that they used for sorceric purposes and what happens l'maiseh? 45:59 That's dangerous. So apparently, lukewarm water, again I don't, again rabosai, you have to understand something, what's very important is whenever Chazal express like medical knowledge, so it's always important to understand, medical knowledge is not spiritual, right? 46:13 So when Chazal ever so there's whenever they express something medical as something harmful, then it's always just expressing what was known at the time. 46:21 So whether it was, I don't know, maybe there was lead in the water, whatever whatever whatever it might be, but obviously what they were saying was correct. 46:28 In other words, they saw that for whatever the reason lukewarm water was having deleterious effects on people. 46:34 So they were saying better to drink from a sorcerer's cup than to drink from a cup of lukewarm water. 46:38 והני מילי בכלי מתכות, if only if it's in a metal utensil, aval bikli cheres, but ultimately if it's in an earthenware utensil less lan bah, there's no problem. 46:45 V'afilu bikli mataches, even in a metal utensil, bless you, נמי לא אמרן אלא דלא שדי ביה ציביי. 46:50 That's only if you didn't put in herbs, legal herbs, right? 46:54 If you didn't put in herbs, right right in there. 46:57 However, אבל שדי ביה הוא ציביי לית לן בה, but if you put in there herbs it's not a problem at all. 47:05 וכי לא שדי ביה ציביי נמי לא אמרן אלא דלא צייץ. אבל צייץ לית לן בה. But again rabosai, that's true also if you didn't go ahead and boil it up, but if you boiled it up it's not a problem. 47:14 So rabosai, lukewarm is the problem, boiling is not the problem. 47:17 What a ridiculous mussar haskel. 47:19 Lukewarm is always the problem. 47:22 Lukewarm is always the problem. 47:24 Choose a team. Be cold or be hot. 47:27 Be fleishigs or be milchigs, but if you're lukewarm then again נישט אהין נישט אהער, what are you? 47:33 What are you? The greatest danger in the world is being lukewarm, because lukewarm is nothing. 47:41 It's not hot and it's not cold, right? 47:43 Too hot to be cold, too cold to be hot, it's just nothing. 47:48 And that the Gemara says is the greatest danger. 47:50 That's why if you boil it up, alright, now you're something. 47:53 Rabosai, don't go through life in neutral, don't go through life pareve, don't go through life lukewarm. 47:57 Choose who you want to be, choose your identity and actualize it. 48:01 V'amar Rabbi Yochanan, Rabbi Yochanan says, rabosai this is great, מי שהניח לו אביו ממון, listen to this, if somebody his father left him a fortune, v'rotza l'avdan and he wants to lose it all. 48:10 And again rabosai, now obviously the Gemara is saying over here like nobody wants to set out to lose, nobody sets out to lose money, but the point over here is if you have a lot of money and you want a 48:18 sure-fire way to lose it quickly, yilbash k'lei pishtan, clothe yourself in linen clothing, v'yishtamesh bikli zechochis, use fancy glass utensils, וישכר פועלים ואל ישב עמהן and hire workers and don't watch over them, don't supervise them. 48:35 This is the sure-fire way to lose all of your money. 48:38 The Gemara now goes through each of these. 48:39 What does this mean? 48:41 Yilbash k'lei pishtan, when we talk about again wear wear linen clothing, b'kisna romisa. 48:46 This was Roman linen. 48:47 So apparently what happened with Roman linen, Rashi says over here, כיתנא רומיתא יקירא הוא, but apparently what ends up happening is that the linen is very expensive and it wears out. 49:01 It wears out very quickly. 49:02 So in other words there's a very it's not a good return on investment on that on that Roman linen. 49:08 V'yishtamesh bikli zechochis, rabosai get ready for this, and what does it say and use expensive use expensive glass? 49:14 B'zugisa chivarta. This was again special white crystal that was very expensive and very fragile. 49:20 So again if you're going to use that, you're going to invest in that, you're going to spend a lot of money and it's going to break. 49:23 Rabosai I just have to tell you something absolutely amazing. 49:25 If that sounds familiar to you, zugisa chivarta, it's because Tosafos points out over here it's a Gemara maseches Brachos. 49:32 And the Gemara maseches Brachos talks about the story where ultimately again the Rabbanan were at a wedding and remember they were getting a little bit too lebiedig, there was a little bit too much frivolity happening, even Rabbis can get a little bit 49:43 too frivolous at times, right? 49:45 So they got a little bit too frivolous and what happened? 49:47 I don't remember who it was in the Gemara, maybe it was Rabbi, I don't remember who it was, took, the Gemara says zugisa chivarta, a very expensive glass and threw it on the ground. 49:57 And that kind of like disrupted the frivolity and got everybody focused. 50:01 Tosfos there in Brachos says rabbosai something absolutely amazing, this is also the makor for breaking a glass under the chuppah. 50:08 The breaking of a glass under the chuppah preceded the churban, was before the Beis Hamikdash. 50:13 Originally they would break a glass at a chasunah in order to temper the simcha, in order to temper the simcha, that again because it's very easy, we all see this, it's very easy for a wedding to descend into frivolity. 50:25 So they would break a glass, you know what happens when something breaks, everybody's like, whoa, everybody stops for a moment and kind of just like just stops everything and then you recalibrate, right? 50:34 Then you level set again, make sure that it's proper simcha. 50:37 After the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, the breaking of the glass took on another symbolism zeicher lachurban. Rabbosai, how incredible is it, Motzei Tisha B'av, Motzei Tisha B'av, the Gemara makes reference to the breaking of the glass zeicher lachurban. 50:55 Overwhelming, overwhelming. So rabbosai so therefore point over here is if you want to lose all of your money fast, invest in this fancy crystal. 50:59 וישכר פועלים ואל ישב עמהן, or hire workers and don't watch them, v'sorah de'nafish pasidayhu. 51:04 This refers davka to the people who lead your oxen, because ultimately again, oxen if they're not heavily supervised, ultimately they're just going to do their own thing and therefore again, if you hire workers and you don't watch over them, you're 51:16 spending your money. So rabbosai the point over here is that halacha l'maisa, if you have a lot of money and you're looking to lose it fast, essentially overindulge, overindulge, overindulge in materialism, in food and clothing, make bad investments and don't watch 51:29 your money and that is a surefire way to lose everything. 51:32 The Gemara goes weiter. 51:35 דרש אבירא זמנין אמרה משמיה דרבי אמי וזמנין אמרה משמיה דרבי אסי. So Rabbi Avira said, sometimes he mentioned it in the name of Rabbi Ammi, sometimes Rabbi Assi. Mai d'chsiv rabbosai, what does it mean when the pasuk says טוב איש חונן ומלווה יכלכל דבריו במשפט, what's the meaning of the pasuk? 51:51 The Gemara quotes over here the pasuk from Tehillim, what does this mean? 51:56 Rabbosai, a person should always eat and drink less than what they have. 52:06 In other words, just because you have the money doesn't mean you should spend it. 52:12 Just because you have it doesn't mean you should spend it. 52:16 And again therefore what's the right, what's the right measurement for this? 52:18 Never spend all of your money. 52:20 Make sure that whatever you're enjoying in this world doesn't utilize all of your resources. 52:25 וילבש ויכסה ממה שיש לו. Rabbosai, this is how beautiful this is, clothe yourself, clothe yourself with what you have. 52:30 In other words, be happy, in other words live within your means for your clothing. 52:36 However, ויכבד אשתו ובניו יותר ממה שיש לו. Wow. Honor your wife and children with beyond your means, beyond your means. 52:45 And again it's actually a machlokes about if יותר ממה שיש לו means just, you know, with the leftover you have by kind of skimping on yourself or or if it means actually for your wife and children you should even go beyond your means. 52:59 But rabbosai but what it does say something absolutely amazing, the pshat the Gemara is saying is for yourself live within your means, for your family go above and beyond, go above and beyond. 53:10 Why rabbosai isn't how beautiful this Gemara is. 53:11 This is absolute Gemara says why? 53:13 The Gemara says why? 53:13 שהן תלויין בו והוא תלוי במי שאמר והיה העולם, because my wife and my children, they are dependent on me, and I am dependent on Hakadosh Baruch Hu. 53:27 So because my wife and children are dependent on me, I have to do whatever is within my power to give them everything. 53:33 That's my job, to try to give them everything rabbosai obviously within moderation and in some level of of reality in accordance with my means. 53:43 But rabbosai at the end of the day, and this is really incredible, at the end of the day rabbosai who does a wife look to for security? 53:49 And this is a very important yesod in sholom bayis. 53:51 Who does a wife look to for security? 53:54 Who? Amazingly enough, it's not the Ribbono Shel Olam. 53:58 Who does she look to for security? 54:00 Her husband. And that is a husband's job first and foremost to make his wife feel secure, that she has to know that no matter what happens in this world, he has her. 54:14 That is my sole responsibility. 54:16 Same thing with my children. 54:18 What's my obligation as a father to my children? 54:21 To make sure that they feel secure. 54:23 To make sure that they know that whatever happens in life, I have them. 54:29 Rabbosai, here's what's incredible, I just want to point this out, if you notice, it's not reciprocal, it's not reciprocal. 54:35 It's not my wife's job to make me feel secure. 54:39 It's not my kids' job to have, oh but it's not fair, this goes against like, right? 54:43 Rabbosai isn't this like you know you go to every single sheva brachos, right? 54:46 And what's the vort at every sheva brachos? 54:49 The shoresh of ahava is hav and it means to give, and of course there's some schmendrick that's been married for seven minutes who's getting up and dispensing marriage advice to everybody, marriage is all about giving. 55:01 Sit down, sit down. 55:03 Take off your bib and sit down, right? 55:06 Don't want marriage advice from you, right? 55:08 But l'maiseh rabosai, it's not true. 55:10 Marriage is not reciprocal. 55:11 Let me take that back. 55:13 Marriage is reciprocal but it doesn't mean reciprocity. 55:17 Which means, there are things that a husband gives to a wife and things that a wife gives to the husband. 55:23 But they're not the same things. 55:25 They're not the same things. 55:27 What a woman has the ability to give to her husband is many different things, but amongst them, confidence. 55:32 Everyone knows that the only person I actually need to believe in me in this world is my wife. 55:37 It's nice if other people believe in me also, it's nice if other people get behind me but at the end of the day, that's not who I need. 55:42 I just need to know that my wife is in my corner, that she believes in me and if I have that, I have everything. 55:48 And what does a wife need? 55:50 A wife needs to know that her husband has her back no matter what. 55:54 That no matter what happens in this world, no matter what goes off the rails, he's going to be there, he's going to take care of it and somehow some way he's going to protect me and secure me. 56:04 That's what a wife needs and that's what children need. 56:07 So rabosai, it's not everybody gives and gets. 56:10 It's two different things. 56:11 A husband needs certain things from his wife and a wife and children need certain things from their husband. 56:15 My wife and my children, they look to me for security, and I don't get my security from them. 56:21 I get a lot of love from them, a lot of wonderful things, but my security has to come from Hakadosh Baruch Hu. 56:27 I look to Hashem, they look to me. 56:30 And if everybody's looking where they're supposed to be looking and everyone is doing what they're supposed to be doing, then the family is confident, secure and set up for success. 56:40 Incredible. Rabosai, I think we're going to, we'll stop over here for tonight. 56:43 What a night! What a night! 56:46 Alright, you know what? 56:47 You just pull a shvuos, you just pull a shvuos tonight, and just a little mishmar, somebody put up a cholent or something, you know, just a little shishi. 56:53 All right, yasher koach. Rabosai, yasher koach.
