0:01 Friends, welcome to this week's virtual drasha. 0:02 This week we have an incredible privilege to be parshas Pinchas. 0:05 And in the parsha we read of a tremendous transition, of leadership transition. 0:09 Moshe Rabbeinu has faithfully led Klal Yisrael for the last 40 years. 0:13 He was the leader who took us out of Egypt, stared down the Pharaoh, led us across the sea, brought down the Torah, brought down the man, led us in multiple military campaigns, successful military campaigns. 0:24 But alas, Moshe Rabbeinu was not to be the leader who would lead us into Eretz Yisrael. 0:28 As a result of a confluence of events, most notably the hitting of the rock May Meriva, Moshe Rabbeinu unfortunately again was going to end his tenure in the desert. 0:38 But as such, Moshe Rabbeinu, as a faithful shepherd, wanted to make sure that there was someone else, that there was another leader, there would be another shepherd to take Klal Yisrael into this next chapter of their destiny. 0:47 Of course, we know how Hakadosh Baruch Hu identifies this man as Yehoshua, the talmid muvhak, the primary disciple of Moshe Rabbeinu. 0:53 That although Moshe Rabbeinu perhaps wanted it to be one of his children, Hakadosh Baruch Hu said it was Yehoshua who's been by your side. 0:59 It's has been Yehoshua who's been in attendance. 1:01 It's been Yehoshua who has dutifully served you and served the Klal during these last 40 years as well. 1:08 And the pasuk says, this is in chapter 27, verse 20. 1:12 Hakadosh Baruch Hu says tells Moshe, so so identify you've identified Yehoshua, and now vinasata meholdcha alav. 1:19 Literally, give of your glory to him, lemaan yishmeu Klal Yisrael in order that Klal Yisrael will listen to Yehoshua. 1:27 So what's interesting is this word vinasata meholdcha alav, give of your glory. 1:31 So the Medrash, the Sifrei says, what does it mean holdcha? 1:34 What's the hold, what's the glory of Moshe Rabbeinu? 1:36 Me now hold shenitan lecha mehar Sinai. 1:40 From the beautiful glory that was given to you at Mount Sinai. 1:42 And what is this referring to? 1:44 When Moshe Rabbeinu comes down from the mountain, the pasuk says var avnei ha'sason pnei Moshe, ki karan or pnei Moshe. 1:50 When Moshe Rabbeinu came down from Har Sinai, his face was luminescent. 1:53 It was like beaming beaming radiant spiritual light. 1:56 And therefore says the Midrash, says the Midrash, the this light Moshe Rabbeinu that you had when you came down from Har Sinai, give it to or give some of it to Yehoshua. 2:06 The question is obviously just what does that mean? 2:08 First of all, that wasn't Moshe Rabbeinu's light. 2:09 That was light that Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave to Moshe Rabbeinu. 2:11 It was light of Torah, the light of Har Sinai. 2:14 Moshe Rabbeinu was given it because he was there. 2:16 How How can he gift that? 2:17 How can he convey that to Yehoshua? 2:20 So this leads another school of commentaries to a different perspective. 2:24 So the Even Ezra, the Chizkuni, the Sforno, all explain that Hodcha means hold malchus. 2:31 Ten lo eizeh serara bechayav, she as kulam lo ba kavod. 2:36 So for example, the Sforno writes, Moshe, give Yehoshua authority. 2:40 Give him authority, delegate. 2:42 Begin to delegate responsibility to him so that people will see him acting in a leadership capacity while you're still alive. 2:48 Again, so instead of Moshe waiting until you until you die for Yehoshua to assume the mantle of responsibility, begin to delegate responsibility to him now. 2:58 The people will see that you're actively vesting him with responsibility, with leadership, with leadership roles and responsibilities, and therefore they'll come to respect him. 3:07 Then comes along the Malbim. 3:08 And the Malbim says something so beautiful. 3:10 The Malbim says, what does it mean venasata me Hodcha alav? 3:14 That Moshe, give of your glory to Yehoshua. 3:16 She Hod, what is Hod? 3:18 What does it mean your glory? 3:19 Moreh hayofi hapenimi hanafshe. 3:24 Literal translated, it means the inner beautiful the inner the inner spiritual beauty. 3:31 Moshe, give of your inner Hod yofi hapenimi hanafshe. 3:36 Inner beau- inner inner spiritual beauty. 3:39 Give of your inner spiritual beauty to Yehoshua. 3:43 So essentially what the Malbim is saying is like this. 3:45 Hakadosh Baruch Hu says to Moshe Rabbeinu, give of yourself to Yehoshua. 3:50 Venasata me Hodcha, give of you, Moshe. 3:53 You have qualities that make you a great leader. 3:56 You have qualities that make you a great person. 3:59 You have qualities that make you a great Jew. 4:02 Give them over to Joshua. 4:04 Give of yourself. Spend time with him. 4:06 Educate him. Get him on the right track. 4:09 Explain to him again what went well, what didn't go well. 4:12 Just give of yourself to him. 4:13 It's fascinating. So again, you have the measure saying when I sat in the whole car motion, give your beautiful luminescent spiritual radiance. 4:21 How can you convey that? 4:21 That's not motion. You have the even as the school needs one or saying again, vest him with authority. 4:27 Give him responsibility. Show the people that you're elevating him to a leadership position while you're still alive. 4:32 It comes Just give of yourself to him. 4:38 Give of yourself. Your inner spiritual beauty give to Joshua. 4:54 Share of yourself and give to Joshua. 4:57 And what's amazing is that if you look at the lotion of the pasuk, right? 5:02 See interestingly enough, the pasuk says goes on. 5:06 So this is again, this is now in perek of Zion, chapter 27 verse 18. 5:10 So you motion, go ahead and take Joshua. 5:16 Summon Joshua bin Nun. 5:18 Ish asher ruach bo, a man who the spirit of God rests in him. 5:22 The samachta as yadcha alav. 5:24 Place your hand upon him. 5:26 So after Hashem says to motion, venasata me hodcha, give of your give of your beauty. 5:31 And again, we'll go with the Malbim. 5:33 Give motion, just give of yourself. 5:34 Just give of yourself to him. 5:36 It's not about sharing your external spiritual radiance. 5:40 It's not even just about going ahead and investing him with authority. 5:44 Give of [clears throat] yourself to him. 5:47 Whatever that means to you, Moshe, give of yourself. 5:49 And then Hashem says to Moshe, Moshe, bring Yehoshua, "Besamta es yadcha alav." 5:54 Place your hand upon him. 5:56 So, that placing of the hand, literally again, obviously on one hand is a designation of responsibility and authority, but also again it represents literally giving of yourself to him. 6:05 And then something amazing happens. 6:07 Vayas Moshe, "Kasher tziva Hashem oso." 6:10 Moshe did as Hashem commanded him to do. 6:12 "Vayikach es Yehoshua." He took Yehoshua. 6:14 "Lifnei Elazar Hakochen u'lifnei kol Ha'eidah." 6:16 And again, in a very public spectacle, he designates Yehoshua and he places him before Elazar, right, the Cohen Gadol, cuz remember remember Aaron had already passed away, so Elazar was the new Cohen Gadol. 6:27 And in front of the entire assembly. 6:29 And what does Moshe Rabbeinu do? 6:31 "Vayismach es yadov alav." 6:33 He placed Moshe placed his hands upon Yehoshua. 6:36 "Vayetzavenu kasher diber Hashem es Moshe." 6:39 And he commanded him. 6:40 Right, literally again, he vested him with authority. 6:42 He conveyed all the different things that were said before and for as Hashem said to Moshe, but I want to point out to you something amazing. 6:47 And this is in perek of zayin, pasuk 27:23. 6:52 Whereas God says to Moshe, remember again the lashon of the pasuk was God said to Moshe, "Besamta es yadcha alav." 6:58 Place your hand, singular, upon Yehoshua. 7:02 Amazingly enough, and Moshe Rabbeinu actually designates Yehoshua, the pasuk says, "Vayismach es yadov alav." 7:08 He placed his hands, plural, upon Yehoshua. 7:13 Hashem only asked for one hand and Moshe Rabbeinu gave two hands. 7:18 Because, dear friends, what's unfolding over here? 7:20 Moshe Rabbeinu understood like the Malbim said that when Hashem told him, "Ten asat me'otcha." 7:25 Give of your glory. 7:26 Hashem was really asking Moshe, Moshe, just give of yourself to Yehoshua. 7:30 Just give of yourself to him. 7:31 Just give of yourself to Yehoshua. 7:34 Not about the external radiance, not about your even your inner just give of yourself to Yehoshua. 7:40 Put one hand on his head and give him of yourself. 7:42 And Moshe says, "You know what? 7:44 If that's what God is asking of me, to give to another Jew, to give to Yeshua, I'm going to give him both hands. 7:51 Hashem only asked me for one hand, but I'm going to give both hands." 7:55 And dear friends, in that moment, something absolutely magical happened. 8:00 Moshe Rabbeinu gave his entire totality over to Yeshua. 8:05 And then the whole of Moshe understood what God is asking of me is to give of myself to another Jew. 8:13 And Hashem only asks me for one hand, but I'm going to give two hands. 8:19 I'm going to give more. 8:20 And dear friends, understand the power and profundity of what the Torah is conveying to us. 8:25 God is telling Moshe not simply a lesson in the conveyance of the reins of leadership, but Hashem is telling Moshe Rabbeinu a lesson in terms of what it means to be a nation. 8:36 What does it mean to be a people? 8:38 It means to be there for each other. 8:40 It means to give to each other. 8:43 And it doesn't just mean to give with one hand. 8:45 It means to give with two hands. 8:48 You know, I'll share with you last summer, I had the opportunity to go to Eretz Yisrael, and something amazing happened on the flight there. 8:58 So, sitting I was just actually just my wife and I was sitting and we're getting ready to take off. 9:02 And again, one of the things I just like to do, you know, just just to be able to relax a little bit and even just a little of a sport of those is just to listen to some music. 9:10 So, I put in my my my AirPods and getting ready in Hashem to relax a little bit at least over takeoff before the Wi-Fi sets in, right? 9:18 Before the takeoff, just relax a little bit. 9:20 And then again, manage something catastrophic occurred. 9:25 I lost my AirPod. 9:27 It fell It fell out. 9:28 I was putting it in and it fell out. 9:30 And you know, it fell somewhere like in between the seats. 9:34 In between the seats. 9:35 I I know, when when a long flight ahead of you and you don't have your AirPods, I'm just like this is this is like kind of a facial. 9:42 So, you know, this is this is an existential issue. 9:45 It's like I'm looking at the fold of the seat. 9:47 I get up a little bit, but you know, they're not going to get up yet cuz they're getting ready for take off. 9:50 And and I'm looking under the seat, beneath the seat, everywhere. 9:54 I I I can't find it. 9:56 One of the flight attendants on the El Al flight, one of the flight attendants came over to me. 9:59 She said, "What's wrong?" 9:59 I told her, "You know what? 10:00 I can't I can't find my AirPods." 10:01 She said, "Okay, you know what? 10:02 If you don't mind, take your seat now cuz we're about to take off. 10:04 After take off, we'll figure it out." 10:06 Okay. So, the flight takes off. 10:08 Again, I'm still airpodless. 10:09 Airpodless, mamish. Airpodless. And okay, flight takes off. 10:14 We reach altitude that that you could take off your seat belt. 10:17 The stewardess comes back. 10:18 She says, "Can I help you?" 10:19 I said, "Sure." She says, "Okay, get up." 10:20 So, she starts she starts looking under the seat. 10:22 She can't she can't go ahead and and find it. 10:25 She says, "Give me a moment." 10:27 She leaves. She comes back with another another one of the stewardesses. 10:31 And they both come back and they're looking and they're on the floor and they're underneath. 10:35 They can't do it. 10:36 They come back. They bring a third person. 10:39 At this point in time, what they begin to do is they totally deconstruct my seat. 10:44 So, the cushion is off, the back is off, the front is off. 10:47 And they're looking and they're this and one is on top and one is below and they're mamish like like hovering everywhere. 10:51 And no one knows. 10:52 No one around me knows. 10:53 I have to explain like it's not like I'm suspect of anything. 10:55 I just can't get the airpod. 10:57 And finally, baruch Hashem, literally after about three stewardesses, you know, no one got anything to drink. 11:03 No one got anything to eat because the entire flight crew of this El Al flight was trying to find my airpod. 11:09 Finally, literally after about 20 minutes, right? 11:11 It felt like about 3 hours, but it was really about 20 minutes. 11:14 They found it. They found it. 11:16 And I went over to the first It was a young one. 11:18 I went over to her. 11:19 I just said, "Thank you so much. 11:21 I'm I I didn't I didn't expect this. 11:23 Thank you so much." 11:24 And she said something amazing and the words will always stick with me. 11:27 She said, kacha usim achad lasheni. 11:32 This is what we do for each other. 11:36 Kacha osim echad l'sheini. 11:38 This is what we do for each other. 11:43 Ahavah, this is what it means not just to give one hand but to give two hands. 11:49 Kadosh Baruch Hu says to Moshe Rabbeinu, "I want you to be there for Yehoshua because Yehoshua is going to have a difficult time filling your shoes. 11:54 Yehoshua can't fill your shoes. 11:56 No one can fill the shoes of Moshe. 11:58 But help him out and at least give him a hand." 12:02 And Moshe Rabbeinu says, "Give him one hand. 12:04 I'll give him two hands." 12:06 Ultimately, Kadosh Baruch Hu only asked Moshe Rabbeinu "V'samachta es yadcha, give him one hand." 12:10 And Moshe Rabbeinu says ultimately "Vayismach es yadcha, I'll give him two hands." 12:15 And dear friends, this is what it means ultimately again to be there for each other. 12:19 Kacha osim echad l'sheini. 12:21 V'nasata mecholcha alav. V'samachta vayismach es yadcha. 12:27 Just to be there for each other. 12:29 It's Erev Shabbos today. 12:29 Rosh Chodesh Av Tammuz is the beginning of the three weeks. 12:33 And we all wonder, you know, what can we do to bring the Geulah? 12:36 What can we do to bring Shalom in Eretz Yisrael and Mashiach? 12:38 What can we do to bring Mashiach? 12:40 What can we do to earn our third Beis Hamikdash? 12:42 And we know the answer. 12:44 We know the answer. 12:45 The answer is to give each other two hands. 12:48 The answer is to be there for one another. 12:50 And the answer is to go above and beyond for each other. 12:54 Kadosh Baruch Hu might only expect us to give each other one hand but if we could find the strength to give each other two hands then it's only telling what we could accomplish. 13:02 V'nasata mecholcha alav. Give up your glory. 13:05 The greatest glory we possess is the inner goodness, the inner strength, the inner abilities, the kochos we have. 13:10 And when we could take those very things and share them with the other, not just with one hand but with two that's how you create Yehoshuas. 13:17 That's how you create Shalom. 13:19 That's how you create Achdus. 13:21 That's how you create Bracha within Klal Yisrael. 13:24 Kacha osim echad l'sheini. 13:28 There's much to be learned from la shalom bayno. 13:31 There's much to be learned from every single Jew, from stories and allow. 13:35 From Moshe Rabbeinu, from Yeshua. 13:37 But if we can emulate this very example and go out of our way just to do good for each other. 13:43 There is no telling what beautiful bounty and blessing the future holds. 13:47 Wishing everyone a good night of Shabbos and a beautiful Shabbos Kodesh.
